Is That Worth Your Time?

I’m sure you’ve done the exercise where you figure out what your time is worth — like at what point does it make sense to bring in a housekeeper? Or hire an assistant? Going a step further: what is your employees’ time worth? How can you determine if In Your Pocket is a good financial decision for you?

Let’s say that your company has 20 employees, and you’ve chosen four employees to be responsible for setting up your booth at a trade show. You’ve assembled this team across different departments (Sales, Marketing, Operations, etc.) and each employee makes $58,563/year (the 2023 average for the US workforce). They’re allowed to start building the booth at 8:00 am on Tuesday, and the show opens at noon on Friday and runs until 4pm on Monday. If they’re onsite for the booth being built, their regular jobs are most likely not being accomplished. At this point you’re looking at at least 3 days of their jobs not being handled.

At $58,563 per year, their per hour rate is $28.16. With four people at eight hours per day, you’re looking at $2,703.36 to not get their jobs accomplished. Additionally, if the trade show is out of town, you’re most likely paying for a hotel and per diem rates for these setup days; let’s estimate that at $200 per person per day. For the sake of argument, let’s stipulate that your employees will be working the actual show—- interacting with your customers and prospects. When the show ends, you’ll probably need to have those 4 people on site for another day to break down the booth, pack up your materials and ship it back; add another night of a hotel stay and per diem costs. At this point, you have $3,200 in hotel and per diem costs… and at least 4 days of your team not able to do their full time jobs. Your current running total is just shy of $6,000 - and remember: this is only for the week of the show. This doesn’t include the hours that have gone towards planning, design and logistics.
